Learn the rules, setup, and winning strategy for The SPILL, a fully cooperative board game where your team races to contain an oil spill before it devastates the ocean.

Quick answer

In The SPILL, your team of 1–4 players works together to contain and clean up crude oil pouring from a blown-out offshore rig before the ocean ecosystem is destroyed.

What makes The SPILL different from other co-op games

Most cooperative board games use a deck of event cards or a timer token to create pressure. The SPILL uses a 4-way dice tower that physically pours oil dice into the ocean board. Each turn, more oil enters the water, and the spill spreads unless your team contains it. This tactile mechanic makes the escalating threat feel immediate and visible.

The game is fully co-op — there are no secret roles or traitor mechanics. Every player shares the same win condition: stop the spill before the ocean is overwhelmed. Communication and role coordination are essential, but the game avoids quarterbacking by giving each player a limited set of actions per turn.

How to play The SPILL step by step

  1. Set up the board and dice tower: Place the ocean board in the center. Assemble the 4-way dice tower above the rig area. Each player chooses a role card and takes their matching action tokens. Place the oil dice in the tower's top reservoir. Common mistake: forgetting to check that the dice tower chutes are clear before starting. A jammed die early on can cause an unfair spill pattern.
  2. Understand the turn structure: Each round has two phases: the Spill Phase and the Action Phase. During the Spill Phase, drop one or more oil dice through the tower. They land in the ocean zones, marking where oil is spreading. During the Action Phase, players take turns spending their action tokens to contain oil, deploy booms, clean up contaminated zones, or repair the rig. Checkpoint: after the first Spill Phase, note which zones are hit hardest. Prioritize containing those areas before they chain-react.
  3. Contain and clean up oil: Use a Contain action to place a boom token along a zone edge, stopping oil from spreading into adjacent zones. Use a Clean action to remove one oil die from a contained zone. You can also use a Repair action to slow the rate of new oil entering the ocean. Common mistake: cleaning oil without containing it first. Oil can re-enter cleaned zones if the source is still active and the zone is not boomed.
  4. Win or lose together: Your team wins if you successfully contain the rig and remove all oil dice from the ocean before the spill track reaches the maximum. You lose if the spill track fills up — meaning the ocean is overwhelmed — or if any zone accumulates more oil dice than it can hold. Checkpoint: keep an eye on the spill track after every Spill Phase. If it is more than half full, shift your strategy from cleaning to containing and repairing.

Game features that matter during play

  • The SPILL: a dynamic co-op game of saving our oceans from a disaster: The SPILL features a 4-way dice tower pouring oil into the ocean, simulating an escalating spill from the DeepWell•4 rig. The dice tower creates a random but steadily increasing flow of oil, so you cannot predict exactly where the next contamination will appear — forcing your team to adapt each turn.
